A recent study conducted in Japan has shed light on the potential of peony root extract as a groundbreaking cosmetic ingredient that offers benefits in brightening and anti-aging skin care. The research, carried out at Ichimaru Pharcos Co Ltd in Motosu, Japan, unveiled the extract’s ability to inhibit the interaction between advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and their receptor (RAGE), thus reducing AGE formation and alleviating skin dullness.
Skin dullness, characterized by a lack of radiance and uneven tone, is a common cosmetic concern associated with aging and environmental factors. While factors like UV exposure and oxidative stress are known contributors, glycation has emerged as a key player in skin dullness. AGEs, formed from sugar binding to proteins or lipids, accumulate in the skin, leading to loss of elasticity and the development of wrinkles and sagging.
The study’s screening process involving 380 natural ingredients identified peony root extract (PRE) as a potent inhibitor of the AGE–RAGE interaction. Notably, PRE demonstrated a significant reduction in AGE–RAGE binding and showed promise in suppressing melanin production and normalizing keratinocyte differentiation, crucial for achieving a more even complexion.
Further experiments highlighted PRE’s ability to directly inhibit the formation of AGEs, positioning it as a comprehensive antiglycation ingredient. A human clinical trial corroborated these findings, showing a decrease in AGE accumulation and melanin levels in participants who used a lotion containing 1% PRE, compared to a placebo group.
