The 13th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences (WC13) took place in Rio de Janeiro, offering a platform for global experts to advance humane and innovative science. This event, attended by researchers, regulators, policymakers, and NGOs worldwide, was sponsored by Cruelty Free International, demonstrating their commitment to promoting cruelty-free practices.
Represented by Laura Alvarez, Deputy Director of Science and Regulatory Affairs, and Monica Engebretson, Head of Public Affairs (North America), Cruelty Free International played a significant role at WC13. Their involvement included delivering three talks, showcasing seven information posters, and co-chairing sessions on various crucial topics such as animal testing alternatives, regulatory harmonization, and the impact of non-animal testing methods on sustainable development goals.
The organization’s presence extended to the exhibition space, where their booth attracted considerable attention, fostering partnerships and sparking valuable discussions. Through engaging with delegates and sharing materials like the Replace Animal Tests (RAT) list, Cruelty Free International received positive feedback, reinforcing the importance of their science-driven approach in driving global progress towards cruelty-free practices.
During their time in Rio, Laura and Monica also visited O Boticário, a Cruelty Free International approved brand in Brazil, to learn more about their commitment to cruelty-free beauty products. This experience highlighted the significance of collaborating with like-minded organizations to promote ethical practices and raise awareness about the importance of cruelty-free initiatives.
Reflecting on their participation in WC13, Monica emphasized the honor of sponsoring such a pivotal event and the positive reception their work received. She stressed the importance of sharing knowledge and best practices to influence existing efforts and inspire new initiatives aimed at reducing animal suffering in laboratories globally.
The momentum generated at WC13 has paved the way for new collaborations and reinforced Cruelty Free International’s role in advocating for non-animal testing methods. This event not only showcased their groundbreaking work but also underscored the urgent need to end animal testing worldwide through collective action and knowledge sharing.
Support from donors and advocates is crucial in enabling organizations like Cruelty Free International to continue their vital work against cruel and unnecessary animal testing. By contributing to their cause, individuals can play a significant role in advancing ethical practices and creating a world where animals do not suffer in laboratory settings.
