Mother’s Skin Cancer Wake-Up Call: Importance of Sun Protection

Amanda Anderson, a 43-year-old mother-of-four, initially dismissed a small dry patch on her nose as just dry skin. Living in Utah and working for a suicide prevention charity, she had been meticulous about using sunscreen due to her family history of skin cancer. However, when the blemish persisted, bled, and scabbed, Amanda sought further medical advice. A biopsy confirmed her worst fears – basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. Amanda underwent Mohs surgery, a specialized procedure that removes thin layers of skin until no cancer cells remain. Despite the successful treatment, the diagnosis was a blow to Amanda, who emphasized the importance of sun protection and early detection.

Growing up in Arizona during the 1980s, Amanda had endured significant sun exposure without adequate protection, a stark contrast to her vigilant sun care practices as an adult. Her father had also battled skin cancer, undergoing numerous Mohs surgeries. Amanda’s experience serves as a reminder of the long-term effects of sun exposure and the importance of regular skin checks. Skin cancer, including deadly melanoma, is prevalent in both the UK and the US, with early detection significantly increasing survival rates.

Basal cell carcinoma, the type Amanda had, is generally non-fatal but can cause severe damage if left untreated. It typically appears on sun-exposed areas such as the nose, lips, and ears due to UV exposure. Squamous cell carcinoma, another common type, can become life-threatening if not promptly removed. Melanoma, though less common, is responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths. The key to survival lies in early detection, with cure rates exceeding 95% for non-melanoma skin cancers if promptly removed.

Amanda’s story underscores the importance of vigilance and regular skin checks. Dermatologists recommend following the ABCDE rule for moles: Asymmetry, irregular Borders, Color variation, large Diameter, and any Evolving change. Warning signs include non-healing sores, bleeding patches, or new lumps. Amanda’s proactive approach to her health and her trust in her instincts ultimately led to successful treatment. She now advocates for skin protection and urges others not to ignore any changes in their skin, emphasizing the preventability of skin cancer through early intervention and sun safety measures.
