Skincare brand Naked Sundays has decided to remove its Collagen Glow Mineral Sunscreen from the Australian market, including from MECCA cosmetics, due to concerns over sun protection claims. This move comes in the wake of Ultra Violette’s similar action following the discovery that one of its products did not meet its SPF50+ label claim.
The SPF50+ Collagen Glow Mineral Sunscreen by Naked Sundays, launched in 2021, was being sold in MECCA stores across Australia and on the brand’s website. MECCA informed customers over the weekend about the product’s removal as a precautionary measure.
Naked Sundays announced that it has halted sales of the sunscreen in Australia for further testing, awaiting guidance from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The company mentioned that the US version of the product has already been retested and met the SPF50 label claim, intending to release this version soon with a lower SPF rating.
Ultra Violette, another Australian brand, had to recall its Lean Screen SPF Mattifying Zinc Skinscreen after testing revealed an SPF of 4 instead of the advertised SPF50+. The manufacturer of the Ultra Violette product, Wild Child, confirmed the recall and stated they have confidentiality agreements with the brands they manufacture for.
Consumer group Choice emphasized the need for urgent action by the TGA and sunscreen brands to address the issues within the Australian sunscreen industry. With concerns rising about the safety and efficacy of sunscreen products, Choice called for a thorough investigation into similar formulations to ensure consumer protection.
The TGA spokesperson assured that they are investigating the matter and will take appropriate regulatory action based on their risk-based approach to therapeutic goods. They reiterated the importance of using sunscreen to protect against harmful UV radiation, along with other sun safety measures like seeking shade and wearing protective clothing.
Choice urged sunscreen brands to assess the risks associated with their products not meeting SPF claims and remove them from sale if necessary. As the investigation unfolds, consumers are advised to stay informed and vigilant about the sunscreen products they use, especially with warmer months approaching.
